How to get rid of rats and mice permanently

If you have had an infestation of rats or mice and managed to get rid of them, then the last thing you want is for them to return, You can get rid of rats and mice permanently from inside. Outside the home it is a bit more difficult to keep them away as they see it more as their territory.

The key to stopping rats and mice getting inside is to be thorough

When you are trying to stop rats and mice from getting into your property, you do need to do a thorough job. In the industry this job is known as proofing.

A mouse can fit through a gap or hole which the tip of your little finger can fit into and a rat a hole the size of your thumb. So you need to consider even the smallest spaces when you are looking for places they might get in. First go around your home looking for any place where a rat or mouse might be able to get in. If you have had rats and mice in your home before it might be a good idea to start with the places they were found the first time. Common entry points include roof spaces and gaps around pipework such as kitchen plumbing or heat pump units.

To stop them getting in fill any gaps or spaces. Suggested options for filling include:

  • Expanding foam
  • Fine gauge mesh
  • Steel wool
  • Bristle strips
  • Special anti-rodent fillers

You can also buy special cone-stops or rat guards to stop rodents running along cables.

Outside you should look for areas that might give rats and mice access to your home. Make cables difficult to climb or run along and trim back any vegetation that might overhang the house and be a pathway to the roof. Removing overgrown vegetation and compost from your garden and keeping rubbish areas tidy can also deter rodents from outside.
